The group formed due to the need of child care for Aboriginal parents. An Aboriginal health worker identified the need and non Indigenous nurse who, during home visits saw that Aboriginal grandparents were caring for eight to ten grandchildren, as their parent’s were attending Thornlie T.A.F.E. Moorditch Gurlongga Association (MGA) was incorporated in November 1985. The first service provided to the Aboriginal community was MGA trading as Coolabaroo Neighbourhood Centre.
The centre was opened in April 1986 and was funded through mainstream child care funding. Within a year Coolabaroo Neighbourhood Centre then became funded under Budget Based Funding (BBF). With the purpose of the centre becoming multifunctional with children services, many programs were established.
Coolabaroo currently has over 50 staff and volunteers. We strive to have 70% Aboriginal staff, with knowledge of Aboriginal culture and Noongar language. Utilising these skills we incorporate Noongar language and teach the Koolangka (children) much of Aboriginal culture.
That is our promise to you as a valued customer.
